Factland Foundation

Where journalists, communications professionals, academics, and knowledge workers formulate new relationships with the technologies reshaping their work — led by veterans of the transition.

A field-lab nonprofit with five years of build history. Grants fund protocol development. Field engagements validate the protocols. EDU distributes the results as open infrastructure. Three loops — build, learn, research — one network.

02 / Our [evolving] mission

A field lab building open protocols for the technological transition.

Journalist-led. Practitioner-owned. Three loops feed one another — field engagements produce protocols, protocols become curriculum, and trained practitioners carry the methods into new organizations.

01 / Build

Build

Developers build alongside our team at hackathons, in-person events, and virtual builder sessions. Current focus: Seed Protocol, PermaPress, the early-stage decentralized AI stack, and embed engagements — bounded builds installing sovereign AI and resilient comms capacity inside partner organizations, then exiting. Each embed field-tests an open protocol.

02 / Learn

Learn

Cohort training for small teams at nonprofits, newsrooms, and mission-driven orgs — plus individual knowledge workers. Participants leave with portable operating systems built on Obsidian and AI workflows keeping human judgment in the loop of production. Every curriculum comes from field-validated protocols, taught by the people who ran the validation.

03 / Research

R&D

The engine of the flywheel. Field engagements surface the problems; research sprints extract the protocols; publication turns the protocols into public goods. The pattern has run once already — a founding cohort engagement became the documented methodology now taught through EDU. Focus areas: decentralized AI, factchecking protocols, hyperlocal knowledge systems, sovereign AI implementation.

03 / Our [live] tech

Open-source by default. Working today. Yours to use.

Not locked behind prod. Not stuck on a whiteboard. Live, open, ready to play with.

Live 01

Seed Protocol

Decentralized publishing protocol on Ethereum/EAS — permanent attestation, version control onchain, indexed across every Seed-compatible client. A public good. No commercial layer, no walled garden.

Beta 02

PermaPress

The publishing client built on Seed Protocol — offline-first, multi-chain storage (IPFS + Arweave), and no business dependency between you and the work you put into it. Commercial launch targets Q4 2026.

Factland App

The original Factland project — decentralized, crowd-sourced factchecking through gamified protocols. A multi-year track record; the platform that grounded the 501(c)(3) work from the start.

Forming

Decentralized AI Stack

Long-term R&D. Scope-doc pending. The throughline: infrastructure freeing Factland and the practitioner network from frontier lab dependency over the long horizon. Scope-doc work advances as grant pursuit and field research align.

All four built JournoDAO's foundation. After half a decade running it as a sister organization to Factland, the two consolidated under the 501(c)(3) in Q2 of 2026. What emerged is a communal container for building, learning, and research at the intersection of emergent technology and the craft of communicating.
